Just as much now as then, fear and hatred transform neighbors into hunters and the hunted.Counterlighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14345956180434795401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2343439372519556254.post-7322350813962078932012-05-29T03:55:01.870-04:002012-05-29T03:55:01.870-04:00Fascinating post, Doug. I'd love his take, UpClose & Personal, re the Land of the Maya, and its indigenous inhabitants.

***

Memorial Day Meditation---

The subject of human sacrifice, ancient OR modern, haunts me. A good example is this:

"Mural from Bonampak showing Yajaw Chan Muwaan, the King of Bonampak standing over captives taken in battle. One captive pleads for his life before the king, while another faints in terror at his feet. The captives are bleeding from having their fingernails torn out."

I CANNOT UNDERSTAND the lack of human empathy! How can you not FEEL FOR (com-passion) another human being. If pricked, does he not bleed? (etc, qua Shylock per Shakespeare)

But the modern version: I just got done watching "Independent Lens"(PBS show) about a badly wounded Afghanistan vet. Thing is, he tells us that when he *signed up*, he told the Marine recruiters that (just like the old Arlo Guthrie bit in "Alice's Restaurant") "I want to KILL".

...but instead of packing what was ALREADY a messed-up headcase to a padded cell, he was instead praised for his motivation, given training to perfect his killing desire (and the tools to do so), and the rest is, well we know.

"I want to kill": seriously, WTF is wrong w/ people? Can they be cured? Can they be cured w/ hugs? [And even now, some Christianist is thinking "we're too busy trying to cure Teh Gay to figure THAT one out, JCF!" >:-/]JCFnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2343439372519556254.post-69217200227078395722012-05-28T11:35:13.962-04:002012-05-28T11:35:13.962-04:00For those of us who have only traveled out of the ...For those of us who have only traveled out of the country once in a lifetime your blogs on Florence and now Mexico are wonderful to see and digest.
