He remembered a group of rabbis in the camp where he was interned got together and decided to put God on trial for abandoning His people to the Nazis (the factual basis for Wiesel's famous story). There was a long drawn out trial with lots of arguments for and against God and, of course, arguments over whether or not putting God on trial was even legitimate. After much argument, it came time to decide the verdict. The rabbis found God guilty of abandoning His people to the Nazis. And they concluded the trial with prayer.
Wiesel said that in his story based on this memory, he planned to add another character who defends God tenaciously, who says that God is always justified, even in the ovens of the Holocaust. That character is Satan.Counterlighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14345956180434795401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2343439372519556254.post-50440846628104244922011-09-03T07:30:57.150-04:002011-09-03T07:30:57.150-04:00Finding myself in conflict with the Pope and EWTN ...Finding myself in conflict with the Pope and EWTN gives me great satisfaction.Counterlighthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14345956180434795401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2343439372519556254.post-7737360938335504862011-09-03T05:32:56.414-04:002011-09-03T05:32:56.414-04:00I was indulging in my EWTN vice this evening, and ...I was indulging in my EWTN vice this evening, and heard an RC (Popoid) seminary professor lamenting "the greatest thing wrong w/ the culture today, is that people think they can't know anything w/ CERTAINTY anymore!"

If only.

To worship at the Altar of Certainty, is to elevate an Isolated Abstraction, over the messy relatedness of everything (there's that "Dictatorship {sic} of Relativism" that B16 so despises).

And if relatedness gets in the way of Certainty, why not just ANNIHILATE everything (everyone) else? I'd like your permission to reproduce it in its entirely on my blog on the Sept. 11 anniversary, along with one of your grainy photos taken from your roof that day. I can't think of a better way to remember those who died and those who grieve. With your permission, of course.June Butlerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01723016934182800437noreply@blogger.com
