A Hard Week

It has been a tough week in which a lot of lives were very cruelly cut short.

First, we remember the dead (14 so far) from the explosion in the town of West in central Texas.  Most of the dead recovered were volunteer firefighters and emergency workers who were there fighting the fire that preceded the blast.
The explosion happened 66 years to the day after the Texas City disaster of 1947, the worst industrial catastrophe in American history, a disaster that involved the safe storage of ammonium nitrate, just like the explosion in West.  The fertilizer plant in West has a long history of safety concerns that will be investigated in the weeks to come.
Let us remember the people of West as they grieve for their dead and rebuild their town.

We remember the 3 dead from the bombing of the Boston Marathon on Monday, all of them ordinary people who had the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  All three were young, and in the case of Martin Richard, very young.  All 3 lives were cut short by an act of cruel and callous violence.
We remember Officer Jean Collier who was killed in the line of duty.
We also remember the many people maimed by those blasts, people who suffered life-altering injuries and who will never be the same again.
And let us remember the Tsarnaev family who lost a son yesterday and saw another once promising son come to such terrible grief.
