So, what is all this talk I hear about Obama's supporters making him into a messiah?
We forget that the current President was once the object of a very fervent personality cult. And for a few, he still is.
I'm sure there are a few bishops out there ready with the holy oil to make George our first king.
Down at the Rapture with George...OMG, gotta run for ones eternal life!

ReplyDeleteTell me these pictures are satirical - please!
ReplyDeleteI suspect they are serious about GWB adoration, though. Looks too much like "velvet art".
NancyP
Oh, come on - some of these have got to be ironic. No one actually painted "Down at the Rapture with George" as a serious tribute to W.
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid, Nancy P, that they are all in deadly earnest.
ReplyDelete"No one actually painted "Down at the Rapture with George" as a serious tribute to W."
ReplyDeleteThe title is apocryphal and probably satirical, but the image is not.
Do you mind sharing your sources? (I suffer from morbid curiosity, not doubt).
ReplyDeleteAnd to quibble, the fake quarter's not really religious.
ReplyDeletePop over and read my latest post with a hat tip to you, Counter. You'll laugh at my lost opportunity for the mutha of all bad religous art!

RE George at the Rapture:
ReplyDeleteAll you really have to do is look at the picture itself. Satires almost always have some built in wink at the viewer. Someone decided to add one by putting on that title. If you take away the title, then you'll see the awkward labored technique of an amateur painter working from a series of photographs and Sunday school illustrations. This was somebody's labor of love, and it looks very sincere to me.
If anything, I think the pillow is the best candidate for satire with Dubya smirking over his shoulder at Jesus. But then again, that smirk comes naturally to him.
ReplyDeleteRE: George and the Rapture
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me a lot of the art from the Watchtower. And it does look like it has a vertical crease down the middle. I've been looking around the internet trying to find a larger version of it - it's hard to tell exactly what's going on in the town in the valley.
Counterlight, take a look at this:

Could this be the original, and the Bush one a "revisioning"?
