Wedding Bells and Shotgun Shells in St. Paul

Here he is, the man of the moment, Levi Johnston, the happy soon-to-be-father and soon to be son-in-law of a political family, the family of Veep candidate Sarah Palin. Even though the press is going ape with his Facebook comments full of teenage bravado, I feel sorry for the poor shlub, and for the poor girl who has to marry him in front of a convention hall full of people that no one would want to see on a jury if they were on trial for their lives, and in front of the world press.

Dude, there are times when it pays to keep your pants on.

  1. I'm not a betting man, but how could such a marriage survive the ridiculous pressure for very long? The again the CIA & FBI have ways ...

  2. I would consider Bristol Palin's pregnancy a private family matter, even for a political family, except that Sarah Palin comes from a political faction determined to regulate all of our families.
I think the real scandal about Sarah Palin is her ties to
The Alaska Independence Party whose positions and activities shade into the seditious.

  3. I wrote a lively commentary on the "Bristol Affair" yesterday at my blog..."Arkansas Hillbilly" was apparently circling the area and immediately "commented" that we best leave the "intended" couple alone as we are "better" than Republicans. I'm not certain I'm "better" than any other meanspirited observer/tiny participant when view this Presidential election because I discovered I fully RESENT the Holy-rolling fundamentalist views on me and people like me as they give their OWN and THEIR destructive behavior a "pass"...I think they can take their "anti-gay health lecture" and cram it forever and e ever...afterall, it is clear that "unsafe" is reflected in the personal behavior of a teenage member of the Alaskan "first" family...unsafe albeit heterosexual.

The rest "of the story" reflects more Karl Rove type grotesque side show antics, the demeaning of "marriage" and the grandstanding and groveling for a few fundamenalist grins of "understanding."

The whole mess, the messmakers and the "reshapers" of reality are plain twisted and unfortunately arrogant purveyors of sick/spin!

  4. I'm with Counterlight; these poor kids are being completely used for her mom's political career. I believe the narrative the campaign has cooked up will pass Repiggie scrutiny; I doubt many swing voters will be be captivated. Otherwise, I'm moving to a more civilized planet.

  5. I can't help but wonder what the public and press reaction might have been if one of Obama's daughters was in the same situation.

  6. Speaking of keeping pants on:

"The world has changed for gay men. I have to add the ritual disclaimer that of course there's still homophobia, but the fact is that in law we have all-but total equality. Yet we continue to behave as if we are a disconnected minority, shut out from the world of responsibility. Gay men have a lot of catching up to do. Hooked on drugs and sex and looks, we call it gay culture. The figures are staggering: 20% of gay men in London use the incredibly damaging crystal meth. Studies show that men who do are twice as likely to become HIV positive. Since 1999, the figures for HIV infections have continued to rise in the UK. Syphilis infection rates among gay men have increased by 616% in the past five years."--- Simon Fanshawe (a gay man) writing in The Guardian newspaper

Well that describes my life, and the lives of all gay men everywhere on the planet with uncanny scientific accuracy. There's nothing like generalizing from the particular and having a statistician provide the data in order to feel oh so wonderfully superior.

Fuck the misanthropic letters to The Guardian, anonymous dude, and get out of the house more.

  9. How many straight teenagers are having reckless sex? How many college students are drinking to excess? The fact is that there is a subculture of stupid behavior that has nothing to do with sexuality.

And in the great US of A, gay people are still not equal.
