Some disturbing video of police brutality at the Sydney Mardi Gras:
I'm not quite sure what's going on, or what this young man could have done to get the attention of the cops, but slamming a handcuffed man into the pavement like that is inexcusable, even by the relatively low standards of the NYPD who usually break heads first and ask questions later (just ask the Occupy protesters).
JoeMyGod has the details so far, such as they are.
I suppose the reason footage like this is so compelling is because it is naked power on display; the armed versus the unarmed; plain raw aggression and rage masquerading as reasons of state. I don't think any of this is new. What's new is that we all have cameras now to record it and broadcast it. This kind of thing (and worse) has always happened, though always in anonymity until now.
UPDATE:
It appears that this was not the only such incident that night with the police, and that Sydney's police force has a history of being very heavy handed.
