We could buy Russian watches at the Flea Market about 10 years ago, but since my son grew up and moved away, I'm not so sure if we could now. There were no waving arms on those, just the big Hammer and Sickle. . .
I'm told by people who know that if you're into Communist kitsch, you must stop at the gift shop next to Chairman Mao's mausoleum. Best Mao kitsch in all of China.
I'm so envious! Give my regards to The Forbidden City and The Temple of Heaven. If you have the time, the Ming Tombs are definitely worth the side trip.
And just who is this person who knows, hmmm? Not next to the mausoleum, in the mausoleum. Best. Giftshop. Ever. The day I went I had $100 USD, but no RMB. So I do not own the Mao hologram on crystal medallion.
Forget about Kim Il Sung kitsch. It's far too holy for heathens and infidels.
I do own the waving Mao watch. Overpaid at Shanghai Tang.

I remember shortly after the Soviet Union fell, you could buy Soviet medals (military and civilian) on the streets of Manhattan for almost nothing.
Hoping to snag some of this kitsch (and some Kim Il Sung kitsch) this August when I'm over there.
I don't generally buy souvenirs, but I love communist stuff.

The hotel I'm booked at is 500 metres from it, so it's definitely something I will hit.

What makes a Mao Mickey Mouse watch "cute". where a Hitler or maybe a Stalin one would not be?
