President Santorum?

Could Frothy win?

Of course he's a walking disaster for women's rights and for lgbts, so we pay close attention to him and his campaign. But what about other people? Is there really that much at stake for them? He doesn't say much beyond the usual right wing boilerplate on economics and foreign policy issues. His campaign, like the rest of his political career, focuses on "values." People just might conclude that he is "moral" without inquiring too closely into what that means. They might see him as the star pupil in catechism class or Bible class and vote for him.

So far, his surge in the Republican primaries and caucuses is due to strong turnout among evangelicals and conservative Catholics ( I can remember when those two groups would have cut each others throats, and gladly; now they are the closest of friends because they have common enemies), and low turnout by just about everyone else. If Obama continues to insist on his centrist creds by dissing his left flank, then he could have a turnout problem when those same people who signed up and carried water for his campaign in 2008 decide to sit it out, or throw in their lot completely with Occupy and hope for some kind of revolution, peaceful or otherwise.

If that happens, then Sister Dolorosa Excruciata's star pupil is in the White House. I remember someone once said about Robert Kennedy that he was both the most religious kid in Catholic school and the meanest bully in the schoolyard. I think that is even more accurate for another ex-Senator.

One thing I've noticed during election time: candidates surge and then fall back, surge and fall back. It's like a cycle. Newt did it, Mitt did it, and it seems to be Santorum's time now. Next thing ya know, Sarah Palin will surge and fall back, and she's not even running.

We cannot let fear take over. Though difficult we survived George W already! The one thing we can do is get everyone we know incensed enough to get out there and vote. We need to do what happened in the past and get those young Democrats together (and everyone else too!) and if need be and go door to door. Fear could ruin this whole election for us, AND for the country.
