Roosevelt relished the opposition of vested interests. He fashioned his governing majority by deliberately attacking those who favored the status quo. His opponents hated him — and he profited from their hatred. “Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today,” he told a national radio audience on the eve of the 1936 election. “They are unanimous in their hatred for me — and I welcome their hatred.”

There are a good many Obama haters out and about. I don't believe Obama relishes the opposition. He's more concerned with bringing people together, but with the present day GOP, that is simply not possible. I think he knows that now, but he felt that he had to try. Now he's dealing with rebels in his own party and catching flak from both sides.
My mother told a story about FDR getting Social Security passed. Before she was married she worked in a small department store in our hometown and after SS was passed the owner was so angry and incensed he nearly shut down the store so he wouldn't have to pay SS benefits. I think the fact that the store was his living (and a good one) made him change his mind, but he would not have the name Roosevelt mentioned by any of the staff or they would be fired. My parents loved Roosevelt.

My father hated FDR. I used to remind him how much he hated FDR every time he deposited his Social Security check into his federally insured bank account.
