"Art is a lie that tells the truth" -- Pablo Picasso
This is a very powerful painting. I rember seeing the first time at the Prado in 1972. I had to leave.
One of these days, I will get to Spain and see this picture. I plan to spend days in the Prado worshipping at the altars of Goya and Velazquez.I picked this painting because it's not the death of a Classical hero or even the death of God, but because it's the crucifixion of Everyman. Jesus' death was but one among millions of unjust deaths in history. His gives meaning all of our deaths.
I started gently with the late Medieval art, Brüghel and so, then proceeding through the Epochs I ended up with Goya - and had to leave ;=)
So true, the Passion is every day.
The public executions of dissidents. How appropriate for Good Friday.
